Fidelity

The stories of Fidel Castro and Camilo Cienfuegos (the man depicted on the wall) are legendary in modern Cuban history. Tales of victory and loyalty, but also of foul play and jealousy.

Cienfuegos was a loyal compatriot of Castro’s, however many speculate that after the revolution, Castro was responsible for Cienfuegos’ untimely disappearance in 1959. Since his death at 27, Cienfuegos has been an everlasting martyr of the Cuban Revolution. So why does the speculation of Castro’s involvement linger on? It is said that Cienfuegos gained more popularity than Castro post-revolution, which threatened Castro’s position in leadership. If true, it proves once again that politics is about a lot more than just pledging fidelity.

When you ask Cubans or read about their relationship, you will get plenty of opinions supporting one theory or the other. Whether they parted as allies or adversaries remains a mystery, however one thing is certain, Cienfuegos, the charismatic, adventure loving, "Hero of Yaguajay” lives on everywhere in the country.

Today I went on a quest to go find Millo's newest mural in Milan. It is a recent work that was just completed a couple months ago. After a bit of searching, I found it online and headed out to see it in person. The mural is located in "Il Giardino Delle Culture" at the corner of Via Emilio Morisini and Via Bezzecca near Piazza Risorgimento.  This shot above shows only a fragment of the large scale mural that is on two buildings and entitled "Everyone Is Searching For It". Once you see the full scale mural, the meaning behind the name becomes quite clear.

This guy was doing circles around me on his bike while I was taking pictures.. He wanted my attention and he got it.

Will Brake for Street Murals

This mural caught my eye as I was walking in The Mission district of San Francisco yesterday because of the stark contrast between the two levels.  I love how the lettering sits perfectly between the plain and the colorful. The Mission is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city because of the numerous works of public art on display. You cannot turn a corner without seeing a splash of color and lots of character.  This is just one of many I captured in my short stroll between a cafe and my BART stop. There will be more to come!

Balance and Focus

Directly beneath Queen Elizabeth Hall on the south side of the Thames is this gem. Skaters started to use this space in the 1970s. In 2008, South Bank Skate Park was threatened with closure for retail development, however it was saved with the help and encouragement of local governement. I love the color explosion on the walls of the park and am very happy it is not going anywhere anytime soon.
